History - how everything started ...The first documented reference to the name Westerhof was in the year 1017 |
• Hundreds of years in the course of history! |
| The "Westerhof" is a historic building with a long history. Originally it was an estate of the monastery Tegernsee by the lake, and the tenants supplied the monks with wood, meat, milk and cheese, lard and even crops of grain that grew well on the south-facing slopes.
Apart from a share of their produce, the tenants on the "Westerhof" also had to lend a helping hand when other services were required from the monastery. The name "Westerhof" first appears on paper in 1017, yet there is little mention of it until 1427. The entry in the abbey’s archives for 1427 states that the "Westerhof" was to cultivate around 1.5 acres of land, not a mean feat for the Middle Ages. If there is any truth in legend, big events were staged here as early as the 12th century. It is said to be here that the great emperor Frederick Barbarossa attended a performance of that most famous of all medieval German dramas, the "ludus de antichristo", written by a monk from Tegernsee in honour of Frederick I. The tile fresco on the wall of the guesthouse commemorates this event and the famous guest. In 1795 the old buildings were pulled down and replaced. 40 years later, the writer Adolph von Schaden describes the "Westerhof"as a place for entertainment for the monks. The activity that attracted most laughter at the time was "summer sledging", something that even the Wittelsbach nobility could not resist: racing down the steep grassy slopes to the village on a sledge. After secularisation and a multitude of different owners (among them brewery owner August Pschorr), the Sehmer family acquired the "Westerhof" in 1953. Several changes were made, extensions added, and soon the sanatorium and private clinic "the Westerhof" opened its doors. In spring 2005, two years after the clinic closed, the "Westerhof"is bustling with activity once again: after extensive modernisation the building was reopened as a bed and breakfast hotel (hotel garni). In March 2008 Dr. Andreas Greither acquires the premises "Der Westerhof" and continues to operate the building as a bed and breakfast hotel (hotel grani). Again a successful union of historic elements and modern comfort has been achieved. Hotel guests enjoy the charme and atmosphere of a very special holiday retreat – and of course the unique location that already fascinated monks and nobility in days gone by. |
